We started our day with a walking tour of this quaint and historic city. It was the capital of Bavaria for about 700 years from the 6th to the 13th century. We began our tour at the Medieval Stone Bridge, which spans the Danube that was built in the 12th Century. It is only open to pedestrian traffic now, since it is no longer stable for automobiles. Lunch was at the Historic Sausage Kitchen, which is 900 years old.
We also took an optional tour in the afternoon to The Weltenburg Abbey and a cruise through the Danube Gorge.
The Abbey was founded in 600 AD and is the oldest monastery in Bavaria. A small band of monks still lives and works there. After exploring the abbey’s gorgeous Baroque church, we were escorted to the beer garden to taste Weltenburg’s house brew with a Bavarian pretzel.
