Civitavecchia is located about 45 miles northwest of Rome. Since we’ve been to Rome twice, we decided not to take the long trip there again. So, we took a shuttle bus out of the port area and walked into the little town. We were pleasantly surprised, especially after just coming from Livorno. There was a nice walk along the beach with many hotels and restaurants. We came upon the statue of the sailor and the nurse (see below) which was of monumental size.
I think we started a trend with this pose. Afterward we encouraged other tourists to “pose” while we took their photo. I was just happy Kos didn’t drop me!
The beaches here, as in other parts of Europe, are rocks.
We stopped at a little oceanfront Café for lunch. This was one of our favorite pizza’s so far. We are trying to sample pizza at every Italian port! So far we’re doing good.
The lemons in Italy are the size of our grapefruits! Kos wants to make lemoncello.
By this time (day 5 on the ship) we are becoming a bit disappointed in Holland America. The entertainment in the lounges after dinner was very good, but didn’t change. Our favorite place to go after the show (which was at 8) was the piano bar. This was the most crowded venue on the ship and after the first night you could not get a seat at the bar. We would find a seat in the back of the lounge and sometimes couldn’t see Piano Man Jim. Seems like the passengers on this ship like to go to bed early! What we did really enjoy about Holland America is that they used the enclosed pool area for dinner parties. This was fantastic since when we got back from being on shore, we didn’t have to change our clothes for dinner. A casual buffet with many different stations (therefore limiting long lines) was fantastic.
Some pics around the ship-----
A beautiful sunset…..
Tomorrow – Naples
